Need to replace bellhousing, and bellows, how difficult is it to replace all. Any tips to make the job easier or are there any special tools necessary?

Tip # 1 get a service manual and follow it.

That's a big messy job, but if you do it right, you can save some cash, and learn something about your boat!

This should be in "Mercruiser repairs"

It's a lot more of a job than it looks, and you do need a manual. You are going to have to remove the shift cable also. If it's been in there for very long, it might be worth changing it while it's all apart. Also replace the shift cable bellows.
You will need the manual in order to get the shift cable adjusted properly and the clamps located properly.
Here are a couple of links that will help out.
Service Manual for Drive

How Do I

wow I did not know it was so easy:)

I have seen the bellows replaced without removing the bell housing. I have also seen many leak cause of a bad seal on reassembly. my special hinge pin tool is the 1/2" hex shank cut off a tapered punch. I broke to many merc pin tools :) :) . can you replace the exaust bellows without the expansion tool? yep. I did it ONCE and the drive was still on. I was about 18 and young and dumb. never again :) :) only took about 10 bandaids 3 beverage breaks and about 5 hours.
if you have the old fwd entry shift cable you will be advised to modify the bell housing in accordance with the merc manual and convert it to the aft entry cable. works better and is a whale of a lot quicker and easier to install. about the best special tools I can think of for the job is common sense coupled with the ability to RTFM :) also carefully inspect the upper shift shaft seal. now is a good time to replace it.
