Any idea what the problem might be? Shifting into forward is fine but when I shift into reverse it is difficult and when I do shift it there is a loud clunking sound. It also appears that water might be boiling up from the outdrive when in reverse.

Any ideas?

Sounds l a combination of shift cable and binding linkage on the lock down mechanism allowing the drive to kick up in reverse, then when you put it in forward it bangs back down.

Thanks! Would I be able to fix that with basic tools do you know? Do you have any idea what a marina might charge to fix that? Is it a major repair?
