So I am new to iboats.com and looking at purchasing this boat to fix. I found a 1985 Bayliner Capri 1950 open bow with 2.1L volvo engine and Volvo Penta outdrive for $500 obo. The add states that a u joint went out and the drive shaft between the engine and outdrive needs to be replaced? It also says the interior is in poor condition (I appholster so I am not too worried about this)

My questions would be:

1. If the hull is not dry rot and all it needs is the interior and the shaft replaced, is this a good deal?
2. I have read alot about the Volvo and most say it is the way to go in this boat?
3. What would the shaft be called and how much is it? I'll do my own work.

I have read where some say that Bayliner is not a good way to start out. I don't have alot of cash to spend up front on a boat so this is a good way for me to get one. I have four kids and will mainly be using it for skiing and towing a tube. Just want a good reliable family boat.

Any input would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I'm hardly an expert in this area, but I'll share my knowledge, as I have the same boat.

1. With it being a nearly 30 year old boat, the chances are you have some rot. Mine was given to me by my parents, who kept it covered and tarped nearly always. It still has rot in the floors and transom. The odds are IMO that you will find some rot. Especially if you live in a wet area such as the Pacific North West.

2. The Volvo Penta has been fantastic for me. Others I hear don't like it as much, but for the boat, it provides plenty of power and has been incredibly reliable.

3. I'm not not sure, and so I won't even attempt to respond.

I have looked some at swapping my engine into a better hull with a bad engine, but ultimately I decided to restore instead. In my searching, I was having a difficult time find a hull in reasonable shape for $500 or less. So if you are satisfied with the condition, then I'd say yes, its a good deal.

To be brutally honest, this boat is going to cost you a lot more than 500 bucks...if the u joint went out while under power, it could have easily cashed in the intermediate housing as well as several other components...hopefully not, but until you tear into it, it would be impossible to tell the extent of the damage...

Next the issue of it being a Bayliner...unless this boat was stored out of the weather for its entire lifetime and maintained meticulously...Bayliners from this era are notoriously prone to rot...rot starts in the lower most furthest back areas of the structure and continue until there is nothing left of the original wood but mulch...if there is any indication of soft spots that are readily felt or seen, then you can be pretty sure it goes far beyond what you can see...

From your description, I would suspect that you would be setting yourself up for a full gut and complete restore...not what I think you are looking for...

Unfortunately, there are no free or cheap boats...they cost money to operate and maintain...at the price you mentioned, this boat could easily end up costing you 2-5 thousand bucks to make safe for your family to enjoy...

Unfortunately, unless you are willing and able to take on a very big, time consuming, and money hungry project...I would suggest you look for an aluminum boat with a solid running engine, a good trailer, that needs the transom and deck redone...you'll still be into it for quite a bit of money, but you can get a project like this torn down and back in the water in much less time and expense than a fiberglass boat...

Even a high priced boat can't guarantee that it is in perfect condition...to be sure you have to perform a core sampling of the wooden under structure...not something most people selling boats are willing to let you do...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this forum is chock full of great deals that are currently undergoing full restorations or have ended up in the dump...

Do your due diligence and thoroughly research your boating goals, or you could be setting yourself up for a major disappointment...

In the game of buying and selling boats, it is never more true...Buyer Beware!

Best of Luck,

Re: 1985 Bayliner Capri 1950 with 2.1L volvo engine and Volvo Penta outdrive

I have a 1986 Bayliner 1950, but with a V8. The boat was visually in really good shape when I bought it for $900., the boat hadn't run in a few years and had a bad starter, that was all according to the previous owner. Having owned a few boats before, I knew better, but for the price I figured that I could part the boat out if there were major issues. I replaced the starter and coil, it ran great.....next was alternator and prop. Took it out for a spin, oops...noisy connecting shaft bearings, so out comes the engine. Once the engine was out noticed something was not right with the starboard motor mount. Investigated by cutting away a section of fiberglass, rot!!... not just rot, but mush like GT says. Pulled off the exhaust yoke, ahhhhh....transom rot. Fiberglass hides rot!

I've been tearing out the bilge/transom area of the boat. I'm lucky because the rot doesn't extend far forward. My suggestion is to check everything and know what your getting into, again fiberglass hides quite a bit.

Mechanical wise, the bearings are pretty easy to change once the engine is out. I tapped my bearings out and back in using a piece of PVC pipe. If your shaft and housing are OK, bearings, seals and C-clips will probably cost around $200. I don't know what they might mean that the shaft needs to be replaced. Unless the shaft is bent or the bearings spun on the shaft, it shouldn't need replacement, likely the bearings. There is just no way to know unless it's taken apart.

I done 3 project boats now, a 1968 15' Mohawk w/50 HP Merc, a 1966 Evinrude Sportsman w/155HP V6 Buick and now the Bayliner 1950, AQ225E.

All these older boats are crap shoots, you just try to find the best of the lot for the money.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

500 bucks would be the trailer cost and the drive train ( which is in poor condition ) ..

Walk away mate.
