Greetings,
I am running a 1985 Black Max 150. Still runs great. Smokes when you crank it up though, I am not bothered with skeeters. I was checking the oil injection setting against the shop manual and it is about 1/2 to 3/4" rich from what the manual says.

My question is do I need to run the oil that much rich on that old of a motor or should I back it up maybe half way? I sure do not want to burn up the motor just for the sake of some smoke on start up. The motor has run good for me the 6 years that I have had it, knock on wood.

thanks for the input.

Jim

If it was mine and it "still runs great", I wouldn't fool with it. A little smoke at start up is pretty common on these outboards of that vintage.

Dave..

Hiya & welcome!

The smoke isn't necessarily due to the adjustment of your oil injection. I have an '82 V150 that I mix the gas/oil for. Even at 50:1 it's the smokiest motor around... it's only noticable at startup and when idling.

Like yours, my 150 runs great... I'm not worrying about the smoke (but yes it's annoying at times).

Also I'd be very leary of adjusting the oil pump based on some measurement from a manual. The only thing that matters is how much oil gets used out of the reservoir when you burn a known amount of gas. Then calculate the ratio it's using. If it is using an excessive amount of oil, then you could back it down a bit (and re-check consumption). Don't go by the smoke, on mine it looks like I'm mixing about 20:1 (but I'm not).

Re: 1985 Black Max

I know the "if it ain't broke, don't fix rule it" rule applies here. But I would seriously consider disengaging the oil injection and running a 50:1 premix. The oil injection system on 80's Black Max's is so famous for failure that it isn't even a decsion for me anymore. Running a premix is peace of mind and the worst thing that can happen is running out of mix, instead of your engine going into a nice seize.
You will have to decarb more often though.

Just my humble opinion-
Andy
