I aml ooking to buy a 1985 Chaparral Boats 190 XLC and the guy selling it said that the electrical part that controls the firing and timing burned out, I called the dealer but they say they do not see the part. This part goes through the solenoid? it is a box bolted down with four screws and he said it was a common problem for this year engine because it did not have an alternator this is what controls charging, water cooling etc.

Can someone help me find this part? I have not seen it yet and he said the numbers are gone due to it burning out, the boat is at a good price but I dont want to add another 400 to it.

I hope I gave enough information as it is all I really have.

I have an '85 198XL mine does have an alternator. You might want to post your problem in the Mercruiser engine forum, you'll get some knowledgeable responses!

Hmm not sure about it not having an alternator. The box that controls the timing is the ignitiion control and it should have a Thunderbolt IV system. And yes it is an expensive part but neeeded. It also has a sensor in the Distributor that controls advance timing. But as far as it not having an alternator I woud doubt that. But I have been wrong before just ask my wife!
