This boat was handed down to me after sitting for 6 years. I have had it out three times, and have been working on it quite a bit in the driveway. I have a feeling that the VRO pump may be failing and that it needs thermostats. The boat will run decent, then act like it is not getting fuel and RPM's will go down or motor will completely shut down. The motor also does not want to idle. I would like to eliminate all possibilities before buying the pump. Here is what I have done:

1. As soon as I got the boat, pumped all of the old gas out of the tank.
2. New plugs
3. After running it once, I suspected the carbs were dirty/plugged since it acted like the fuel was restricted (which they were) and cleaned them/put new jets in.
4. I then started to get a constant alarm (overheating?), thought water pump, pulled it apart and the impeller looked brand new and I have a good stream of water coming out of motor. Still getting the alarm.
5. I pulled the gas line off looking for possible fuel restriction in anti siphon, but it appears that there is not an anti siphon in the gas line.
6. Did some more tinkering today, got the motor started but now I have a beep, beep, beep alarm (No oil?)
7. Replaced the voltage regulator as there were issues with the tach, which seems to be solved now.

I added an additional in line filter to help catch some of the junk coming out of the tank, don't know if this would cause a fuel restriction? The fuel problem seems to be getting worse, that's why I am thinking VRO pump. I have been struggling for a month with this and am thinking of taking it to a marine mechanic, but would rather do the work myself if possible. Any advice is appreciated!

How does the head feel to the touch? Have you checked the thermostats? Is the motor cutting back to 2500rpms when the alarm comes on or is it just cutting off? Check compression man, I hope you didn't score up your cylinder walls.

A constant horn is either an overheat or the vacuum switch is indicating high fuel vacuum (a fuel restriction.) The engine can have a strong telltale and still have one thermostat stuck shut, causing an overheat on one side. Stats are cheap, probably a good idea to replace them both. A rapid beep (one second on, once second off) is a fuel pump warning. Either it's not working or the oil supply line has an air leak. Check the sight glass in the oil line right by the fuel pump. Considering how critical this pump is, you'd be advised to either follow the factory service manual test procedures, or take it to a skilled tech. I'd add some oil to the fuel tank immediately as a precaution.

One side of the motor is definitely warmer than the other, the stats were ordered this morning. I will check the oil supply for an air leak tonight.

Tonight I unhooked the fuel line after the pump but before the carbs, turned the engine over and pumped fuel into a clear bottle. There did not appear to be any oil mixed with the fuel, especially when compared to 50:1 gas I have for the weed whacker. Is this a sign of bad VRO pump, or indication of an air leak somewhere? When the oil line is unhooked and the oil primer bulb is pumped, there is good flow of oil.

It sounds like the pump is bad to me. I had a similar situation with my 1985 60 hp. I finally discovered the line going to the pump from the oil tank was pinched under the motor to where it mounted in the upper unit. I had purchased this boat and motor brand new so it happened at the factory. I was always getting oil just not enough, it would heat up and shut down (actually seizing up) This probably isn't your problem...who knows, maybe the same guy put your motor together
