Does this motor charge the battery at all or just draw?

If it is electric start then it should charge the battery; read the voltage of the battery with engine off then start it and read it again at the battery; if no difference then you probably have a bad rectifier. The engine does not need the battery to run since it is generating its own power t run. Never run an electric start engine with the battery unhooked; this will almost guarantee a fried rectifier. Dang! I just bought an 86 electric start and it didn't have a battery connected. I already fired it and test-ran it in the rain barrel. I don't think it would have mattered if it DID have a battery because the cables were broken under the sheath. Are my diodes popped? Expensive fix?
