1985 Evinrude 25 - vs - 2013 Etec 25

I currently have a 1985 Evinrude 25 on my stripped down pontoon. Not a speed demon by any means, but I'm satisfied with the performance and I've never had a problem with it. Problem is, it's loud and it stinks.

I have the opportunity to upgrade to a 2013 Etec 25 and was wondering if I can expect the same/better/worse performance out of the new Etec as I am getting out of the 1985?

My main concern is the sound but I don't really want to get any slower if I don't have to. With my wife and I on the boat, I can get between 13 and 15 mph (via gps) depending on conditions.

Is 25 hp 25 hp or is there more to it than that?

Thanks for any and all opinions.

No Title

This is the pontoon that I'm referring to.

"Its noisy and it stinks." Sounds like the words of a wife?? :)

I am pretty sure the Evinrudes in '85 were actually rated at the crank, not the prop. At this time they had just started to rate the motors at the prop. The newer motors are rated at the prop. I think you can expect to lose 10% from crank to the prop. The newest 2 strokes made will be quite a bit quieter, especially at idle.

Now, if you were going from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke and staying the same HP, I would expect you to lose some torque and actually have less performance. BUT, the 4 stroke will be much quieter.

Honestly, the price of a newer motors is CRAZY, and I wouldn't want to spend it until that good old 25 you have on there craps out. Its funny with displacement hulls like a pontoon, how little difference you will notice by upping the hp (until you finally push it hard enough to get it up and out of the water.) I personally like 100-150hp on pontoons :)

i would say the speed would stay the same but you will probably have to mess with props to get the right rpm - i'm betting the gear ratios will be different so needing a different pitch prop. I'm not sure it will that much quieter at full throttle. But I think the plus will be the gas mileage will be up some.

Thanks guys. Actually it's me that thinks it's too noisy and stinky. :D The wife rides in front so she doesn't notice it as much. When she drives, it doesn't bother me as much.;)

If I were to buy a new one, I'd go bigger but I have an opportunity on a used 2013 at what I feel is a decent price (2500.00 with controls) that's why I'm asking.

Is 2500.00 with a year left on the warranty a good deal with controls?

Thanks again.

That sounds like a deal to me. Outboards are crazy in the PNW

The Etech should show a little more power and be less smelly. Noise and top speed probably won't change much.

Your speed is going to stay about the same once you figure out the correct prop for it, $2500 is a pretty good price for a nice newer engine, as has been stated, you are going to get a bit better fuel mileage, less noise and certainly less smell. You should be able to sell your old motor for a pretty good price if it is in good shape and recover some of your investment in the newer motor.

Going rate in Wisconsin seems to be about $400.00 for a 25hp regardless of age but more about condition. Have seen a few that are listed at $600.00 but are not selling.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate the info.

I have a love/hate relationship with my current 25. When I'm riding in the front, I love it, when I'm riding in the back, I hate it. :D:mad-new:
