this engine stalls as soon as i put it into forward rear in the water. It runs well when i run it on the earmuffs on land both in neutral as well as in gear. I have cleaned the carbs with valvetect motor decarb. I replaced the spark plugs. Compression is between 100 & 115 lbs in all 3 cylinders. one suggestion was to have the carbs rebuilt. It this a difficult job? so far I have only changed the water pump.(successfully, I might add)I bought this engine used from a private party. Owner was original & claims the engine has only 100-150 hrs of use. Any ideas? thanks

What rpm is your engine idling at in and out of the water? The engine will idle a bit lower in the water due to the back-pressure on the exhaust system. Can you get it in to gear and “goose” it a bit? How does it run once you are up past idle?

Mac

sullymate

Rebuild the carbs as was suggested. 95% of the time, a additive is not enough to clear out the gunk in the carbs. Could be the float level is off in the carb or a clogged low speed idle circuit. This is a common symptom of carbs needing a good cleaning. They are not bad to do if you have a Manual, the rebuild kits, carb cleaner and some patience. Did this motor sit for a while before you got it? Because if it truly has only 150 Hrs on it, it must have had some lay-up time.

You can order kits at the link below for about $18.00 each. You will need 3, of course. v12mac- thanks to you & all others for your replies. this engine idles at750rpm in neutral & 650 rpm in gear. If I goose it real fast it will catch & run fine. as soon as i slow down it stalls. I have a repair manual and will order the carb kits.
the fuel pump was suggested for replacement. This engine is VRO which is a sealed unit. is the fuel pump part of this VRO system or is it elsewhere on the engine? Thanks again for everyone's advise.

It is part of the VRO. One side is the oil pump, the other the fuel pump, in the same unit.

I would definitely look at the carbs. You do have to take them apart to clean them properly, which is not to hard of a job. Some years there was no adjustment for the idle fuel mixture, which means you can't adjust for idle or off idle which can cause the engine to not idle properly and to bog at take off. This requires a nightmare of changing jets.If after you clean the carbs and if ther is no improvement I would search for some of the older carbs with idle adjustment.60,65 HP models have them and they work better with very little loss of top end.Did you check the compression because VRO's are notorious for going bad and running an engine.Get rid of the VRO because it is a problem waiting to happen if it hasn't already happen. All you have to do is plug the oil input line, mix your oil 50/1 and it will work.

Is that 750 in the water or out?

to-dhadley this engine idles in the water at 750 rpm in neutral it is hard to tell what rpm it is in just off idle, in the water, as it will stall immediately unless you give it a lot of throttle and hope it catches. on land, with the earmuffs on it will engage forward gear and will not stall at all. it seems to run perfectly on land when the engine is not under load. Also, I was concerned about the VRO system having problems. just plug the VRO hose and run 50/1 ratio of oil/gas in the tank? Thanks for everyone's advice.
