Cant get the bearing carrier to sit all the way in. Bolt won't reach the floating plate behind snap rings. Does that plate have to be flipped to a specific side to grab bolts?

No it does not.-----Do you have a guide pin in one hole to line up the holes ?-----Have you given the bearing carrier a good bump to drive it into the lower unit ?

Yes I made 2 guide rods and and the propagate is fully inserted. I just pulled those stupid snap rings on and back in and I'm going to try again ... Just to be sure.. those snap rings both sit in front of that plate in the 2 grooves ? Or does a snap ring go first the plate then snap ring

Likely easy to spot what is wrong if parts were on my bench.----And yes the plate goes in before the 2 snap rings.

I do have manuals-------I repair those without the use of a manual.----Done many of them with no issues.---Are you using the same screws and the same bearing carrier ??

First I'd like to apologize for wasting intelligent people's time. I had to work the drive shaft back in forth while taping and it slid home... this whole project started from the engine stalling when placed in gear.. And the lower unit isn't the problem so once back together I still have an issue..

No, the nuetral safety switch has to do with cranking of the motor.----Has nothing to do once motor is running !!----Post the results of a compression test.----Do you have spark that jumps a gap of 3/8" or more on all leads , yes or no ?----Does it stall with cover / cowling off, yes or no ?

I have 122 lbs in each cylinder.. And I'll check the other 2 variables... And post. Fyi during the same day of issue I had a coil not firing which I replaced and while removing carbs I noticed the top carb leaking some..

Bottom line is the engine is not making enough horsepower to turn the prop against the water when you shift, but is enough to stay running with no load in neutral. Reason?? There are so many variables that it is impossible to diagnose from a distance. But the most likely is simply running too slow. Try setting the idle speed up a bit. In fact you are supposed to set the idle speed while running in gear. If that doesn't help, you are going to find out why. Carburetor linkage adjustment is extremely important. Compression is ok, so it probably is not an internal engine problem.

I've put the lower back on and I'm checking carbs now for any debris. Carb one is good. Gaskets are still new.. I'm going to put new plugs and check Spark intensity. As well as look at fuel pump... this motor has been great... I can't kill it.. I'll post results

better to soak and clean carbs when in there, and put in new kits. Hard to spot issues, although leaking is a clue.

Did a spark jump test and in the top 2 cylinders nothing bottom left real fast spark and top left sparks one time then nothing. And top right nothing and bottom right normal.. I switched coil packs with known good part and still same results.

Performed a peak test and got 1.2 on the ignition and determined that the cdi4 was bad bought one and installed it corrected the firing issue. Motor is running great on the house idle is around 800 rpms tomorrow I'll water test..

Nice!

Idle speed might be a little low if on muffs -- think you would look for about 1,000 or a little more.

Look for 750 rpm(+/-) idling in gear, in the water. Throttle Idle setting could still be an issue, as mentioned in #12. (Low idle setting in combination with weak or wonky spark might have given you the original stalling issues.)

Excess fuel at the carbs likely due to the ignition issues that you have corrected. Might want to clean up and regap plugs (.030).

Hi Guys.
Back in the saddle again.
I set all these motors at 1100 1200 RPM. off load. Works out to between 750 and 800 on load.

Sounds a little high, idle spec is usually about 600 - 650 under load
