A while back I posted a question about my 1985 Evinrude motor. The first question asked back was compression. It was then that I realized I probably should have a professional look at this for me. However, not many shops want to look at these old carburated motors. A shop came highly recommended by several of my boat owning friends. They agree to look at it but could promise they would fix it.

We are a month in and they have spent 3 hours on it. They replaced the plugs, cleaned carbs, and replaced a solenoid that had an air leak. They ran it on a hose and said it was ready for pickup. I took it that night to test it out. I could hardly get it off the trailer. Every time I put it into reverse it died. Then finally it ran long enough to get it off the trailer. Put it into drive and the same thing. But could never get it into forward without it dying. After so many attempts I had to paddle it back to the dock. Took it back the next morning.

They said they would take it up to the lake and look at it again. They finally did and just confirmed what I had told them. I thought maybe the idle was set to low. But he said that was not the case. He thought it may need smaller jets or reeds since the carbs were clean and compression and spark were good. But he did not seem confident in this.

Any thoughts?

Checked the flywheel key?-----" good compression " means nothing to me.----Post your actual values.----A compression tester is a mere $40 and elegantly easy to use.
