Hey guys.

So I took advantage of a beautiful day yesterday and took the boat out with the father in law.

Fantastic day, jsut no finsh.

Anyway, during the course of the day we moved around between 5-6 spots looking for fish and didn't have any issues.

However, leaving to head in, on the first attempt the starter didn't go. Tried again and she starter up fine.

Pulled in at a jetty and switched her off waiting for the trailer, then go to start her and nothing.

Didn't even hear a click. So I tried the trim and also nothing. I tried the other electronics on the boat, so lights and fish finder and everything worked fine.

Managed to get the boat out and had a fiddle. We noticed that the trim relay would buzz when I tried to fiddle with the trim. But only one of them.

Got home, hooked everything upto a battery charger/power supply and still no go. Just buzzing.

Charger indicated the battery was almost 3/4 full.

Thoughts?

Did you check the fuse at the starter?

+1 to high trim...........both tilt and trim and engine start are on the same fuse under the cowling. the pumps/lights etc on the boat are on a diffrent circuit. look for the fuse thats inline near the starter solinoid and check for a blown fuse (can sometimes be a fuse thats dirty causing a bad connection)

Bad battery or bad connections. A battery charger won't help a battery that is shorted internally.

Yeah, I tried that main fuse and it was fine. Took it out inspected it and replaced it. No affect.

I've sent a message to the father in law to try disconnecting the battery, reconnecting and trying the trim as per the other thread.

I think he is also going to try a jump from a good battery.

Ok, just got a call from the father in law. He left the battery on charge over night and everything worked for him today.

This is bad as far as I can tell as this indicates the battery is not being charged.

Where should I be looking now?

Have the battery load tested and if that's okay look into your charging system.

Ok,

We tried the motor again today and 2 out of the 3 times we started it there was a puff on the negative wire @ the battery and a short buzzing near the starter.

We disconnected the battery, reconnected and everything seems to be working fine. Startes each time.

BUT, i put a multimeter across the battery terminals and I'm not seeing any increase in voltage when we start it.

Thoughts?

Fix the bad negative battery connection first.

Yep, addressed the neg and she starts like a trooper first time every time now.

Still no noticable increase across the battery terminals when idling, have it a quick rev with the idler leaver thing and nothing.

No charging could be a few different things. Voltage regulator is a decent place to start. I'm sure somebody else has a better place to start. I was thinking cdi electronics has a trouble shooting guide but I'm not sure on that.

Yes to the "cdi electronics" troubleshooting on their website. By "inspecting the cables", that means going from the starter all the way to the battery. You should have "shiny" wire anywhere there's a connector (at the battery or the starter). If the wire is even "gray or dull" looking, it can cause a bad connection. Best to clip off the connector in, move back a little to fresh wire, and reinstall after cleaning it. There was just a thread over on the Chrysler forum where the OP was convinced his cables were fine, and he was having a starter issue. The resolution was he scrubbed the connections clean, reinstalled and no longer has any problem. Smoke from the negative terminal is not a good sign.

If you had any smoke from the negative cable it could be corroeded inside. Try bending it and if you feel a crunch, it may be bad.

Or if you have a volt meter, do a voltage drop test on it.

Ok, slowly getting to the bottom of my issue.

Did some testing yesterday and I can confidently say it's the rectifier/regulator.

Started the boat up with the fish finder voltage reading displaying and there was no change between off and running.

Confirmed this with a voltmeter.

Cracked open the cover and tok the cover off the regulator. Tested the wires and it seems there is about 4V going into the unit via the yellow/grey wire but nothing coming out.

Further evidence was the rather big burn bubble in the gel that houses the circuitry.

See attached pics.

Next step is to pop down to the boat shop over the weekend and find out exactly which unit I need and what sort of gasket/sealant needs to be used when installing it.

I am 99% sure this is the one, but no mention of sealant. Hmm.

Case closed!

Rectifier went in today. Started her up and teh voltage was slowly but steadily climbing at idle. Only had it running for maybe a min but it got upto 13v and was still climbing. :)

Next weekend, water!
