1985 Force 85HP startibng issue

I have a 1985 Bayliner Cuddy with a 1985 Force 85HP engine that I cannot seem to get to start.

I'm thinking the starter is junk.
The battery and terminals are good and clean. We even ran a jumper from a car battery (running) straight to the starter itself with the same results. Just looking for feedback?

It would appear from what you've done that the starter is suspect. Especially if you used a good quality set of jumper cables and not those flimsy 6 gauge ones. If you're mechanically inclined, the starter is pretty easy to take apart to clean and replace the brushes. If there's a lot of rust and crud inside the starter, it may be better to replace.

These engines are notorious for not jump starting well. Before you start fussing with the starter, check all connections at the battery and block for corrosion. Clean the terminals well and at the battery, put two lock washers on either side of the terminals (total 4) then secure them with the wingnuts. The sharp edges bite into the battery and wire terminals and insure a good connection.

Now, at the engine, be certain the ground is attached to the block near the terminal board with a 5/16 bolt and lockwasher. There is a tapped hole there. It is a little difficult to get to but it is the best ground available and the preferred ground. Be certain there is no corrosion on either terminal of the solenoid. Now, try to start it.

If it still cranks slowly, then there still is no need to ruin your day out. As long as the battery has enough "juice" to power the electronic ignition you can still rope start the engine with the switch on.

Here is a 125 that I rope start for practice so I never need to be stuck on the water due to a starter or bad battery.

I've been thinking about practicing rope starting my 85hp Frank. I want to start off the hard way by cold rope starting. Hopefully I can find an item to hold the choke closed while I rope start and keep it on hand in emergencies. One of my fears is that the knot in the rope will grab the flywheel when she fires and whip the rope around and smack me. Has that happened to you Frank?

Correct , It was the starter. Took out the old starter out and had it bench tested. Tech said the starter was spinning but definatly lacking power. He then tried to sell me a USED one for $145.00 --- told him I'd shop around and if thats the best I could find then I'd be back........ Amazon.com -- found a NEW one for $92.99................ Took about 30 minutes to install it, double checked ALL the connections, pumped the gas a couple times and Shaazaaaammmmm ---- turned right over, idles fine, and Im ready to ride !!!!! Thanks all.
