1985 Johnson 90 Outboard Control Question

Ok guys, I'm going to plead my ignorance here. I am used to running smaller outboards with no remote controls, or and inboard engine with a basic (pull out, push forward, pull back) type control. Now I find myself with a 1985 Sport Craft with a Johnson 90 outboard. The controls to it are a little different from what I'm used to. Can someone clue me in to how this control works? What's the top lever for? Any tricks to starting/stopping or throttling with this type of control? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

the lever on top is for the fast idle when starting the engine, you also have either a choke/primer toggle switch or you turn the key to "on" to choke/prime the motor when starting. read this. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225510
