1985 Johnson 90hp Oil leak

Any ideas on where this might be coming from? And how serious it might be? It appears to be very dark, and not milky.<br /><br />Thanks much<br />Ken

Looks like two cycle oil accumulation running from the intake silencer.Not a big deal,just unsightly.One thing you could check though is to insure that the hose that leads from the bottom rear of the intake silencer is securely connected.Also ,may want to remove the silencer body and clean and inspect or replace the gasket to carbs and gasket to cover.Good luck.

Very possible that you have a bad base gasket. Not unusual for the gasket between the block and midsection to fail. OMC has gone through a couple of changes on this gasket over the years. A failed gasket lets exhaust into the cowling area, and the black tarry exhaust leaks into the lower pan area, just as in your picture. The gasket is cheap, but you have to take the powerhead off to replace it. While not fatal to the engine, it is messy, and the leaking exhaust fumes get sucked right back into the carbs.
