I have 90HP model J90TLCOS with power tilt/trim but the wires at the rectifier & regulator's have been cut off. Someone has replace it with a rectifier that is for a non power tilt & trim motor. The person I got the motor from said the tilt and trim worked fine but I want to know what could happen by not using the right rectifier & regulator? The correct part number for the rectifier is 0395391 and they put part# 0582399 on.

Your engine should have a 9 amp stator whereas the non power T&T models only have a 6 amp one. The correct rectifier is a rectifier /regulator whereas the little round one is just a rectifier.

May therefore be possible to overload the rectifier that is fitted. Lack of regulation coupled with the bigger stator may also be tending to overcharge the battery.

Big difference in price between the two rectifiers as you have probably discovered.

Thanks Vic.s....I like your quote "if it at broke don't fix it" I will see if this motor runs and if so then I'll leave it for now.

It seems like overkill to specify a 35 amp regulated rectifier on a 9 amp motor. In the 1990 90hp motors they used a a 10 amp water-cooled regulated rectifier (0584204) which only costs around $75. to $85. aftermarket.

I think I'd do the same BUT I would check what sort of volts reading there is at the battery esp if running at high speed for long periods. If it goes too high the battery will need frequent topping up if no more .

If the volts do go too high or the rectifier burns out then maybe you can follow up Ezeke's suggestion and source a less expensive lower rated rectifier/regulator

Ezeke,
Do you know of a web site that sells the cheaper rectifier and if it will work on a 1985 90hp? Thanks

Did you look here on iboats?

I just ordered some parts. Prices beat most places and shipping was fantastic. Three days on Standard Delivery.
