I have looked at this thing from all angles and it seems that the starter definitely needs to be removed before the carb mount nuts can be accessed.

Does anyone have info on how to remove this starter motor. I thought that I could remove the starter gear and be able to lower the casing far enough to access the one carb nut, ...but that didn't seem to work.

Can anyone please tell me what needs to be done here? Also, I need a carb rebuild kit, but need the specific kit number, does anyone here know it?

Thanks a million! You guys are awesome!!!

Go here..top left...click johnson....and look for your engine year, HP and model... then look at the carb diagrahm..zoom in and you will see the carb rebuit kit and number

If you are just doing the bowls and jets then you shouldnt need to bull the entire carb off...if you are going deeper then you will....

Get a manul for your engine..its so worth every penny!!

You don't mention what hp engine you are working on. Hard to help without that information.

you have to remove the starter bracket the 3 bolts holding it in...then you can access the nut on the starter side...I tried many ways and thats the only way I could get to it....

I have the same problem but got around removing starter by using a large flat screw driver and hammer to tap the nuts off. just catch the edge of the nut and tap the nuts from a few different angles. The nuts on my carb now have a few nicks on the outer edge. If you're nuts are too tight this may not work. Don't tap so hard that you damage the bolt. You major mechanics may not agree as i'm shortcutting.
