Did some reading here but not all my questions got answered so here we go
Looks like to disconnect the shift rod I remove hair pin in linkage and push towards motor to disconnect but read also that there is a nut on the other side that needs to be removed so theres 2 different readings already.
Does the shift rod come out with the lower unit? seems the top where it hooks up under front of powerhead has sort of a S curve to it ,how would that fit through the small round hole just below it?
Probally stupid questions but I just dont get it.And really dont want to pay a shop for something that should be fairly easy
Also it is a E70TLCO

thanks for any help

Re: 1985 lower unit removal

Did my 97 Evinrude with help from experts here. Here goes mine from recollection.Mine was behind starter to access the rod with s curve.Take starter off. Had to get bolt off using a knuckle socket - loosened it enough to use thumb and finger to back it out, So far all this is on port side of mine, This little bolt rides on a round portion cam then the threads. Finished removal with fingers to avoid dropping into the void in bottom under engine. At this point removed bolts holding gear box. Have engine at the angle to remove it as this shift and other rod that has water impeller on it (water tube?) has to clear the ground. It will slide out-note position of threaded shift rod -threads to adjust the shift.Replace at same position. You will see one opening for shift rod and one for water tube. With this off it is the time to replace water pump(impeller) loc. under the housing where water tube enters gear box.Why are you removing it ?? Hope this helps.Another set of hand is a help to guide the re install.

I did the impeller finally and the removal of the linkage was alot easier than I thoght it would be.Pulled pin in linkage , push towards engine and done , that easy
