Hey all, I recently replaced my ignition switch due to the plastic housing cracking. After installing the same 6 pin ignition from Mercury, with the same wire colors, i cant get the engine to turn over.

Wire Colors from Throttle Control:
(2) Purple
(2) Red ** Dual colored wires are on a single terminal (Making 6 total terminals).
(2) Black yellow
Yellow black
Yellow red
Black

When i test the voltage at the signal post on the starter relay when the key is in the START position, I only get .12 volts. Interestingly, when i disconnect the purple wires from the ignition switch, I get normal 12.6. Could one of the wires be in the wrong spot? It just baffles me because the wires are wired just like the previous switch.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks in advance!

I have the same exact engine, down to the year. Can you upload pictures of your wiring? I will check mine when I get home and get you more info on how mine is wired.

Everything looks like it matches up. On mine, for some reason as soon as the purple wire reaches the end of the harness and goes to the plug at the motor end, the two purple wires are shorted to themselves. It creates a loop for the purple wire. I have no idea why and I'm hesitant to recommend shorting any wires without knowing why mine is like that. All the other wires continue into the motor wiring harness except the purple ones.

I am 100% certain that my wire colors are correct on my switch. But When I turn the key, I get a click and nothing else. However, I did a continuity test between the black wire on the throttle control to the negative post on the battery. I get nothing. SO I am thinking there's a ground issue. I wired up a temporary ground wire from the battery to the black on the throttle control/ignition switch and the starter bendix kicks up and spins! But doesn't make contact to the flywheel to turn it. This is very weird. Any thoughts?

Sorry I dropped off here for a bit. I will try to get those pictures up in the next week or so, but more than likely I will forget again. :-(

check the main fuse right next to the starter, if you cut several wires at once , you blew the fuse
