I have just bought a Merc 50 1985 and want to check the gearbox oil level. The only thing that resembles a filler hole is a 10mm diam srew just under a rubber slot marked "vent" on the leg.
Is there a dipstick somewhere ? or I am a dipstick for not finding it ?
Where do you add oil and what grade is reqd ?
I am waiting faor a manual (out of stock)..

This question made me laugh soooo hard. Im sorry, there is no dipstick. That is just where you look to see if there is oil in it. There are 2 flat head screws on the same side of the lower unit, one up high, and one down low. Remove the top one and the lower one to drain. Pump the oil into the bottom hole until it comes out the top hole. Put the screw in the top hole, and then put the screw in the bottom hole. Make sure that you replace the gaskets on the screws to make sure that they will not leak and water into the lower unit. If the oil that comes out is milk, then you have a seal problem somewhere.

I'm more used to car engines... these outboards are wierd. But at least they're at chest height with no crawling underneath. So plenty of light and look much cleaner too.
Reckon I could get used to that.
