2 summers ago I replaced the points system with a delco electronic distributor kit. The original distributor had number 1 cylinder node one point port of forward....the electronic delco has number 1 cylinder connected to the second node port of forward...the firing order on the two is the same but I'm wondering if the I need to ensure that I follow the delco wiring instructions or should I stick to the original....I have never been able to get the timing advance set properly on the new distributor so that I get the correct revs at top end and I'm wondering if this wiring difference may be the cause....would love some advice....I've attached a drawing of the two layouts...when I originally installed the electronic kit the system worked well but as I've indicated nailing down the timing has been an issue.

I am setting the base timing with the bypass in place. It works good but when it advances with throttle when the is in the water it won't reach the spec rpm. Do you think that the point on the distributor cap that I have the #1 cylinder wired to matters so long as the firing order is correct?

Maybe someone else will jump in - maybe I don't understand your question.
spec rpm?
If you want to check advance, you rev it to a certain rpm and then check the degrees (if you have a fancy enough timing light - I wouldn't bother because it's electronic... nothing I can do about it)
You set the base timing and you live with the advance the engineers designed in.

maybe some good reading for you here:

as far as the cap - either you set timing or you didn't, if it's pointing towards the bilge pump or you bait bucket, who cares?

the distributor gear has no master tooth.

Ayuh,... That could be a Fuel, or Prop problem...
