The OMC production V4 and V8 loopers started in 1985. The first V6 production looper was in 1986.

There were also crossflows produced at that time. If youre trying to figure out a particular motor, post the model number. The production crossflows have several plates bolted on (by-pass covers and exhaust covers). Loopers do not have removable exhaust or by-pass covers.

Good luck!

I have a 1985 V-4 Model Number 90TLCO

What is the difference between a crossflow and a looper? Which is better?

Dave

Crossflow pistons have tall ridges in the dome to direct the flow of the intake and exhaust. Looper pistons are smooth and slightly domed.

Crossflow intake charges shoot straight into the cylinder through the intake holes. Loopers add additional charge volume through passages built into the piston skirts and/or cylinder.

Loopers get more Hp out of the same bore. Crossflows are practically bulletproof.

Loopers eat more gas.

If you're twisting a 17" prop with the crossflow, you'd probably be able to run a 21" on a looper, 19" for sure.

DHadley, wasn't the main difference between the 1970's 85-115s and 125-140s that the smaller Hp group were crossflows and the larger Hp group were loopers?

Dave you have a V4 crossflow. A very good, time proven design. The 90 degree V4 loopers are (compared to a V4 cf) bigger, heavier, make a bunch more torque and are an extremely good design also. The 60 degree V4 loopers are about the same weight and size as your cf. They also make a lot of torque and have a ton of acceleration.

There were V4 crossflows rated at 140 hp from 1977 to 1984. In 1985 the 140 cf was designated as a 115. The 1985 140 was the looper. The 120's are loopers too.

I'm not sure that the 90 degree loopers burn more fuel per hour but since they make more torque they usually burn less fuel per trip. Obviously it depends on the set up. The 60 degree loopers definately burn less fuel than their cf counterparts.

To answer the other gentleman's question, going from a 90 or 115 cf to a 140 cf on the same boat with the same set up is usually disapointing. The 90 thru 140 crossflow all have the same bore, stroke, intake and gear ratio. Yes, the porting is slightly different as are the carbs and heads but it takes a well designed hull to see small differences.

However, going from any cf to a looper is like night and day. Its the torque deal again.

We've had many V6 crossflows on my Dusky. They all ran and performed as expected. We've also had some 60 degree V6's on it. The 60 degree 150 I have now is faster, quicker, lighter, quieter and burns less fuel than any of the crossflows (150 to 200) we've had on it. It's 1940's technology vs 1990's.

I will back this 100%, as I did just this...115 to a 140, and it turns the exact same prop about 100RPM more....I was VERY disapointed.

Kenny, that reminded me of something funny. When we raced the crossflow on the Allison, I specifically used a 110 block (same block as the 140). Everytime we went thru inspection someone was bound to tell me how much faster it would be if we used a 140 block.

Oh really??

maybe someone can correct me ,but I remember hearing something about early 80's evinrudes/johnsons being rated at the flywheel. I know the can of worms is open.

Nope no worms. In the early 80's and before the motors were rated at the flywheel. From then on they were rated at the propshaft.
