1985 tilt/trim dont work in water?

ok trim works on land great ,but when in the water it dosent work only when trolling slow! how can i fix this ,do i have fill the oil if there is oil?
it looks like a big electric wire going to it!

you probably have a tilt system ... in which case it is doing exactly what it is suppossed to do. If, on the other hand, you have a trim system that fails under power but does not bleed down then the most likely cause is the bypass valve in your tilt ram. A valve body failure would bleed down.

its says prestolite and has an oil fill plug on the side! its mounted on back of boat and a cylinder runs to side of motor bracket ! is this just tilt?

tilt looks like a shock absorber. It is prefectly round, tall, and skinny with a mounting eye welded onto the end of a shaft.

trim looks like a floor jack that is missing the lift arm. It is short and squat with either a square or five sided shape. It has no mounting eyes. Just a fat little shaft that pushes out a few inches.

Look under your engine and see what you got.

i have nothing under motor, so must be tilt, looks like a shock !
