Hi all...

I've been "lurking" for some time since I bought my boat. It's an 85 Wellcraft with a late 60's Chevy 230CID, 2bbl Rochester and Merc Alpha one drive. It seems the engine was rebuilt and after pulling and replacing all of the plugs, all of the cylinders seem to be in good working order. I replaced all the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and coil. It starts and runs like a champ...with three adults I could push 44mph. Does that sound about right. It's got a 14" 19p stainless prop.

I've got a couple of ??? however...here goes

How do I replace/gap the points?
Is there a fuel filter attatched to the fuel pump?
Where does the cooling water exit...is it through the propellor?
How reliable is the 230/Alpha one combo...any "glaring" problems/quirks to be aware of?

As I said...everything appears to be in great shape just don't have much experience with the straight 6's.

Just remove the points. Straight forward, screws and nuts maybe. Get a tune up guide.
There is usually a filter somewhere in the system. Some have a filter on top of the fuel pump.
Cooling water exits via the exhaust manifold and out thru the prop and the idle relief port. (starboard side in the transom plate)
the 160MC unit is a good solid unit and when keep properly serviced (like anything else) will last a long time.
If yours is one of the eariler ones it has the thermostat at the stern end of the exhaust and several water hoses.

Oh I'm sure it's not original...Looking at the engine block number dates it to 1968 or so, however the drive matches the 85 date I believe. It starts right up, idles great and runs smooth through all power settings with no stumbles on acceleration. Clean as a whistle too...you could eat off of the valve cover.
