1986 140 engine replacement

I need to replace my 1986 Mercruiser with am Alpha 1 out drive .I bought new head only to find that both the head and block are cracked... ;(
What years will work for a replacement?

I already have a head for the existing motor. I found out the block was cracked as I was starting to put the new head on. So I am looking for a short block. Mod Edit - See above.

Bondo Probably more your area of expertise....

Agree Bondo is the guy who will know, but since your replacing the block and head, I would think about finding a newer 3.0 motor. Get one from a rotted out hull and use it. The newer motor may have a different coupler but will not be an issue so long as it comes with the new motor

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,...... I believe it was 1990 that the crankshafts changed, so for swappin' Just the short block, a '89 or older,.....

Post- '90 will require a different flywheel, 'n possibly a different coupler,.....

if you just want a block, stick with the 2-piece RMS blocks from pre 1990

if you want the best 3.0 you can get, get a complete post 1992 motor and drive then you get the A1G2 drive as well.

A newer 3.0 will fit your original drive. Only difference in matting is the flywheel, bell housing and coupler, so if it comes with the motor your good
