1986 140hp mercruiser i/o water pump problem

I am thinking about purchasing a boat that has a 1986 140hp i/o mercruiser. The owner says the water pump won't prime. He got this boat at an auction from an elderly couple that could'nt use the boat anymore. He's never gotten it on the water because it is too heavy for him to tow. He doesn't know much about boats (like me). He's dropped the price to $1000 and I would like to know if the water pump is an easy fix and if the boat is a good buy.

i just did my pump in the out drive it's real easy<br />just get a book, it's not as bad as it looks<br />84 Merc 120 w/AL1 drive
