I have a 175hp 1986 mercury outboard. its been sitting for a while and i just recently put it on a boat. I have checked everything the compression is good the spark is good, and i just rebuilt the fuel pump. so heres the problem. first i pump the ball and give it some gas to start it. then i let it idle but its not idling on all 6 cylinders. i rev it up a little bit and its clearly not running right. but then when i really give it some gas it sounds fine. then when i let it back to idle it runs weak and eventually shuts off. Then i have to re-prime the ball. If i continuously pump the ball it will stay running but sounds like ****. im trying NOT to rebuild the carburetors. any help will be great.

The other choice is to go boating. Run it just like that. Maybe put a couple cans of snake oil in the gas to "clean" the carbs.

Then come back when you burn down a perfectly good powerhead and we'll walk you through a major overhaul.

That's yer choice.

Hope it helps
