Hello all, been a while since i have been here(boat has been runnin good).I have a couple of things that i need some help with.
First off, i have a 1986 40 hp mariner. Was wondering what model it is. When I put in the make, hp,and year in to get parts,it asks me what model. these are the choices,7040206, 7040226, 7040706, and 7040716.

Now to the motor problem.First of the year the motor ran fine.Started getting hard to start then would turn over but not start. I have changed the spark plugs, cleaned the carbs, and put a new gasket and diaphram in the fuel pump. Now it will start and run fine for about a minute then start sputtering (almost like missing) then die. once it dies, it is hard to get restarted.

Also, last time I had it out,it started dieing while running fine then when i tried to come in, at full throttle it was running at half speed at best.
hope someone could help, need to catch some fish.

Thank ya'll

Your engine is a Japanese built Mariner and as such they are notorious for trying to figure out the model number unless you have it written down in your records. However, when using the s/n search at Crowley, your s/n comes up on the page for a model 7010706, parts here:

Check through this and see if it matches your engine,ie; does your engine have the oil pump?

Sorry, I forgot that... Yes it has the autoblend but I recently ran the fuel line from the gas tank straight to the motor and mix the gas/oil myself. The link posted does look right except it doesnot have a steering handle. has a cable going to a steering wheel.

It looks like someone has modified yours to a steering wheel as all the models have tiller handles.

Have you done a recent compression check on the engine since you started having the difficulties?

Here is a simple compression test procedure. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask but if you feel that it is beyong your level of expertise, see if you have somebody with experience to help you.

What it does is to determine if all the cylinders are in good form to produce power and if they are allows you to move on to issues of spark, fuel etc.

Ok, had a buddy stop by and did a compression check. Both cylinders read right at 130. Both pretty much identical. The guy who did the compression test said it sounds like the coil might be bad. Now he claims to be no machanic so I was wondering if that sounds about right? If so, is there a way to check the coil and see if it is bad?
Thanks for all the help.

Easiest way is to remove the sparkplugs, re-connect them to the leads and hold the threaded end of the plug against an engine bolt, while someone cranks the engine. Watch to see that you get a good spark jumping across the gap. Ensure you use insulated pliers or heavy gloves to protect yourself from getting excited.

You should get a service manual for this engine:

6E9-350001 AND UP (ML) $71.50

Yeah, he did the plug to bolt thing and said it was getting a good spark but said after the motor warms up a bit, then the coil could start breakin down. I will look into the manual.
Thanks for all the help
