I have a 45hp Mariner outboard motor. I can only get the foot to seperate about 3/8" from the drive shaft housing. I can see a splined shaft and think it to be the shift rod. I can also see 1" of the shift rod at it's top where it goes through the cover.
I was told the shift rod would either have a cotter pin in it or a nut/lock nut in it to seperate the top part of it from the bottom part.
I can see nothing but the shaft with a small shoulder on it at top and some splines on the bottom end?
I need to put an impeller in it, but can't get it apart??????????
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!I'm goin nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its been a long time since I went into my lower unit but I think if you shift it into forward gear it will drop down further....anyway its worth a shot.

The shiftshaft is splined so, if all the bolts are removed, the gearcase should slide off easy. Sometimes rust builds on either on the driveshaft or shiftshaft and makes it a little difficult to remove. You might try a little force with a pry bar or screwdriver. Careful not to break anything.
