Hi
New owner of 60 hp 1986 merc. It ran great thru full throttle range for a week or better, It has since been bogging and cutting out badly at 2000 rpm. under load, in the driveway and at idle, it runs great Sometimes I can coax it through and get to 5k-5500. Lately, it has been shutting down completly at WOT and dying.
I have changed plugs and both fuel filters( fuel injected) There is spark on all cylinders, I have not done a compression check yet. I'm running 92 octane. The bulb does not feel very firm when this happens. Today I took it out again after reading several posts, when I choked it during a bog, it ran up to speed, The next time it died when choked.. Is there a fuel pump or something similar. ? It does this more often than not but it is intermittant. meaning, in a day, it will happen several times but not every time.
I feel it is fuel related, but not a mechanic by any means,
Any help is appreciated
Brett

I had this happen on my buddies pontoon boat. It ended up being a crack in the fuel bulb. It was sucking air. make sure all fuel hose connections are tight, look for any cracks in the fueline. make sure the coupling is plugged all the way in.

Hope this helps,
Suzuki40

I mean make sure the coupling is plugged all the way into the fuel tank...

Thanks Suzuki.
The fuel lines look like they are all new and I have checked all the connections, they seem good and tight, the bulb is also new. I think I will buy some hose and run new lines anyway. I also use two portable tanks and this happens with either tank.
both if they are vented or shut tight.
Anything else I should look for?

sounds like the fuel pump needs a rebuild. Parts are cheap and it will likely fix your problem if the bulb is ok.

Brett,

Are you opening the Vent on the Fuel tank?

Forget it, I just read your post about both tanks... Just make sure the vent is open and clear so you don't have negative pressure in the tanks.

Your description with the choke identifies the problem as a lean condition. Your engine does not have fuel injection, just carburetors. The fuel pump is a possibility, try pumping the fuel bulb when it acts up, if it picks up rebuild the fuel pump. If not, you either have an air leak or more probably you need to remove and rebuild the carbs which is a fairly common maintenance necessity.

Regardless, buy a manual for this and other eventualities that will come along.

I had a similar problem last summer. Turned out to be a extremely small piece of debris stuck in the high speed jet of one of the carbs.

I figure the problem was intermitent depending on how the debris was sitting in the jet. If it was totalling blocking the jet, I'd lose the cylinder that carb was feeding and get the situation you are experiencing. If it was sitting such that fuel could get through (albeit somewhat restricted), I'd run ok.

Sounds like you've already got good advice on the troubleshooting. Eliminate the fuel line/bulb as the source of the problem, then rebuild/clean the carbs.

Good luck!

Brew

Everybody Thanks for the input. It will be a cpl days before I can check the items that you all have brought up. Since I have had the boat so little, I have been tying to come up with anything that I may have done to cuase ( the ol operator error) since it ran fine the first few times out.
One thing I did do was add some outboard oil to the auto oil injector. And it was different than what he had used previously, I could not get merc oil as they were out.. I know it probably has nothing to do with it but I drained the oil and will be refilling with the merc oil tonight. I am only bringing this up so that somebody else searching like I did may find it useful if in fact it does seem to improve things.
My plan is .
1. replace oil
2 take someone with me to squeeze bulb while I am under power
3. replace fuel pump if bulb squeeze seems to improve things.
4. possibly have the carbs pulled and cleaned/rebuilt.
I have the manuel, the carbs look tricky to me for a relativly green backyard mechanic.

Thanks again.

If the motor has not been run for a while go ahead and clean the carbs before you end up burning a piston playing with it while it's still running lean.

If pumping the bulb helps it probably isn't the bulb itself but the fuel pump on the powerhead which isn't maintaining fuel flow. It would need to be removed and rebuit (diaphragm and gaskets, etc.). Get a manual, the carbs aren't that difficult. The hardest part would be removing things that might be in the way.

Re: 1986 60 Hp mer boggs intermittantly *I think its fixed read how*

Update.. Ok Call me a wuss,,, I have ordered the carb kits and will be getting them tonight. In preperation, I decided to pull everything surrounding the carbs off and just look and ponder a bit. I took out the jets of both carbs and they looked perfect, no varnish, no debris or anything I could see,, Ialso took out the mixture screws to see if they were varnished or dirty etc, they looked brand new as well. There is no fuel coming out of the barbs when I pump the bulb ( which would mean the float is not working?),,So my question, given that the carbs look from te outside to be well taken care of and from the inside pieces that I explained earlier, to be relaivily new. Should I go ahead and dismantle and rbulild the carbs anyway?
Oh and BTW,, the problem has gotten steadily worse,, I know know what u mean by "sneezing" it did that one time, It is harder to start, and really is bad under load at anything uner trolling speed.
Thanks for any input.
Brett

Re: 1986 60 Hp mer boggs intermittantly *I think its fixed read how*

Well thanks very much for all the support on here.
I replaced every fuel line in the motor as well as the bulb. After removing the idle screws, I saw that they looked brand new as the jets did.
So I finally was able to get the wife out on the lake with me for soem High speed testing, I turned the upper carb adjustment scre with no results, But when I turned the lower carb adjustment screw, It came to life and started to run at WOT. I fiddled with it a bit more to find the low and high adjustments before going to approx the middle of those two ranges. The boat ran great for 30 mins and several applications of throttle from idle to WOT with no hesitation at all. Though the RPM's only got to about 4700 and 28 mph or so which if I remeber correctly was a bit low.
In addition, the motor will troll nicely at 7-900 rpms, but when I placed the lever in neutral, it would die. I did not get to play with it after that but I am assuming I should be able to fine tune the lower arbs adjustment to get it to idle in nuetral as well.
I'm not sure what the "fix" was for certian but it was either the hose, or idle screw adjustments. Remember, the boat ran perfectly when I bought it but started acting up shortly afterwords.
So.. is it fixed or am I hiding the problem by adjusting the idle mixture screws,, Anything else I should do?
Again, thanks !
