I can't mount my throttle cable to the powerhead on my 1986 mercury 4cylinder 75hp outboard. It appears there is a small metal plate with a screw that looks like it goes over it but i tried that and the screw just spins. is there any way to securly fasten it to the pwerhead so the motor does not go out of control ?? thanks,

Hi,

Parts 2,3,4, and 5 hold the cable on.

Which part is giving you trouble?. #2, the latch should be loose enough to slip on to the control cable and tight enough so the cable end will not pop off when moved It will have about a 1/16 of an inch clearance when it pivots on to the cable.

thanks for the link! well it seemes like there is a flat piece with a screw and i think or it looks like that is what holds the throttle on to keep it from coming off but it nooks nothing like part #2. It is just a flat piece of aluminum with a screw that just turns. it doenst get tighter at all spins freely.

thanks,

Hi,

Well someone has put something non standard on it then. The diagram is for a 86 75 hp.
I would see if the screw has a small nut behind it in the recess for the part #5 nut. If there is then maybe you can tighten it up some how. Or buy the correct parts. Post a picture of it if you can or email me one. My email is in my profile.

Thanks for the help! there happened to be a nut on the back and i tightened it up and sure enough it worked. Put it through some really rough shifting and it was holding so i guess it works.
