Okay very long story but trying to supply all details. So today I brought my 17' Proline CC with a 1986 Evinrude 90hp VRO (VRO Disconnected Running Premix)which I bought about a month and a half ago never had much problems except sometimes being a little hard to start unless you knew all the little quirks as all old 2 strokes have. We took it out on the lake and its usually an ocean boat but anyway filled up with Supreme+ Gas, added the oil and fuel additives as it was kind of a final flushout after having it in the ocean. Engine started up turn key (usually doesnt actually) but headed out with 5 people all of which were under 150 lbs and ran strong for an hour and a half no issues, while driving it though at about 4,300 rpms felt a sudden deceleration of about 5 mph as if I hit a log or wrapped a prop (nobody else felt it actually), I quickly slowed it down and put it in neutral second I hit neutral it cut out. Thinking I just decelerated too quick I thought nothing of it being an old two stroke, I lifted the engine thinking I might have weed wrapped round the prop, I checked plugs and stuff nothing looked out of place I replaced the cowling and tried restarting which took awhile had to really rev it up and throw it into forward aggressively to avoid stalling. The engine sounded funny instead of a slow low grumble it sounded like it was revving weirdly high like as if you had wrapped some seaweed if you know what I mean. I trolled back to the dock slowly water was still getting pumped everything looked as it should, I tried accelerating again but the engine hit around 3,000 maybe and began to cut out so I decided to just keep it slow, got to the dock and while changing gears to slow it down it cut out again. Anyway got it docked looked though the engine all connections lifted it in case it was a flooding problem and waited awhile. Every time I tried to start it it would sputter once and die no matter what combination, the only way to get it going was to rev the engine out of gear but the second we tried to drop it down to neutral it would sputter out this trying to get it started continued for the next 45 minutes. During this time I did manage to get it in forward once and tried to test it out see if the problem sorted it out but it still sounded funny and sputter out and the wind pushed us back to the dock. So simply, it seems like when under load or just just idling it will stall out. Finally we gave up and hauled it out. I couldn't find any instances like this on the form so I thought Id ask, any thoughts? I haven't done anything at this point, and the pump is the regular VRO pump not a replaced one for just fuel.

Outboards in good condition start right up with the proper starting procedure !!!!!----------These motors have a history of broken piston rings,-----Therefor you do a compression test and report the numbers you get.

Thank you for your insight, I haven't thought about that. I don't have anything to test compression at the moment, but when purchased it was apparently perfect, could it be carbon buildup, since it has been getting proper fuel lubrication and I'm not sure if overloading could have been an issue. Although the issue seemed to escalate pretty suddenly if sometimes cold starting was a symptom, any more ideas would be greatly appreciated as I'm not about to go tearing through the engine just yet. Also could spark plugs be an issue?

The absolute # 1 thing to do is a compression test.---------Then check spark .----Checking spark means you force the system to jump a gap of 7/16" or more on all leads.
