Hi All,

I'm new to the boat ownership scene as of last Friday. Picked up a boat with a 1986 90hp inline 6. Externally the motor looks very clean. Power trim works, starter turns it over with no problem. The motor is very reluctant to start, and can take several minutes to get it even coughing. First thing I checked were the plugs, they were clean, and when grounded to the block, they would spark. The fuel bulb seems to create pressure as it should, and the enrichener is working since the bottom 2 carbs are getting fuel when I engage it. After it does start, it seems to have plenty of power for about 15-20 seconds, then starts dying, and no amount of throttle will keep it running. My guess is that the fuel pump isn't working up to snuff. Anyone else deal with similar symptoms that can point me in the right direction?

Thank you,

Don

Re: 1986 90hp hard start

Welcome,
You've found a great place for all your outboard questions. Lots of pros on here. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. From what I've learned on this forum you're on the right track. Sounds like the only fuel you're getting is what the bulb has pumped to the carb but the fuel pump won't take over from there. If you're gonna do your own repair work, get a repair manual and follow the instructions to rebuild the carb(s). If the fuel pump is seperate from the carb, rebuild it too. Sounds like you may have some varnish in there prohibiting you from getting started easily.
Just my 2c.Hope this helps.
