Hi

When tilted up, my 1986 85HP Force slowly "sinks" down every few seconds. I've tried refilling fluid, but it did not help. I noticed what looks like fluid is leaking from underneath the lower piston (see picture). I've never done any work with hydraulic's and would really appreciate some help and guidance

Thanks in advance!

You have 2 problems.
The tiny leak is just a bad seal.
It can be real easy or one of the worst things you'll ever attempt. :(

The seal can be lifted out and reinstalled with a new one after the mating surfaces are cleaned,
make sure there's no corrosion on the aluminum mating surfaces.
Any corrosion? that will need to be cleaned and smoothed out.

#2 the pump in the lower unit needs 2 new seals on the shuttle valve.
Read the first 4-5 posts here in the Force forum.
One will have the repairs needed for fixing the pump.

The seals are real tiny about the size of a pencils eraser cut in half. See the pics in the repair
section.
You might be able to fix this if the parts aren't destroyed when removing??

are you referring to this: Force Tilt & Trim Relief Valve Repair

I read it over and to be honest, I have no idea what to do (or even where everything is located)

These are in the lower unit of the outboard?

and for #1

Are there any instructions/diagrams available for changing the seal available?

The bolts have a strange star pattern on the casing for the piston (I assume it needs to come off)

I'm sorry, buy i'm a bit confused and have never attempted anything like this and only have a very basic mechanical background and tools
