I bought a 1983 Bayliner Capri 16ft. bow rider 2 summers ago. This boat has been awesome for two years almost $0 invested. This summer it was working great and I decided to upgrade the fuel tank and put new lines in. After that the starter seized up and I replaced that. Two weeks ago we were out at the lake and the stupid thing won’t start. Took it to a shop and they said the stator is fried because the starter back fed power through the system and fried it. They told me that if I’m replacing the stator then I should replace the trigger as well. I asked how much and they said $1000.00 for both. I told them I paid $1000 for the boat and that’s crazy. So I brought the boat home and started hitting YouTube and the forums. I think I can replace these myself but I do not know where to find parts because whoever had the boat before me swapped the motor from a different boat and the data plate is missing. I have no idea what model number my 1986 Force 885hp is and there appears to be 15 or so models for that year....

how can I find the model number? How can I find the parts I need? Is this a project that a handy guy like myself with no outboard experience can tackle or is it a pipe dream and time for a new boat?

If you are a little handy you can troubleshot it by your self.
Outboardignition has the troubleshot chart and with a VOM you can figur out what part is faulty.
If no spark at any of the plugs the shop conclusion maybe right. The stator is bad, cause it charge the capacitors in the CDI modules. But it sounds odd that the starter back fed power through the system. The starter does not produce power voltage.
Changing the trigger because of bad stator also sounds odd.
Parts are available from CDI electronics, ebay or other sites.

The shop said because the old starter seized in the up position it was feeding power back through?? I don’t know. I have a VOM and will test the stator and trigger when I get it all pulled apart. In the mean time there is no spark on all three cylinders. I’ll keep checking back. Thanks!

DON'T EVER GO BACK TO THAT "SHOP"
If you can't dazzle them with brilliance??
Baffle them with bullshit!!
They were out to screw you.

Never had to replace the trigger along with the stator(unless the bill needs a little padding)
more BS.

What colors the motor? White, 1980-1986
Blue/black 1987 to 99

Let get to the problem.
No spark could be the stator.
No spark on 1 cyl. could be the trigger?

Testing the stator.
outboardignitiondotcom or CDI Ignition both have test procedures for all Forces,
depending on the year.

Same for the trigger.

Look on video's on Force outboard repairs.
You'll need an analog meter and basic hand tools.
Then eventually a flywheel removal tool.(I use a BIG 3 jaw puller)
Gonna send you a PM.

The power (12 volts) will not feedback through the regulator / rectifier. You were fed a line of B$.
The stator might be bad or the CDI box might be bad etc, but you would do better to learn to work on the motor yourself looking at U tube etc.
The stator could have been damaged by the rectifier failing, but did they even mention replacing that?
Disconnect the rectifier (yellow wires) and see if you get a spark when you turn the motor over with the (new) starter with the plugs out and the wires grounded.
If when the shop looked at the motor after you had tried starting it and the gear was stuck engaged with the flywheel that would be normal as the gear spins back down when the flywheel goes faster than the starter.

Thanks everyone for the feedback I really appreciate the help. First things first is the motor is Blue and Black the only info on it was a sticker that said 03/20/1986 (that sticker has since disappeared). I assumed that was the manufacturing date but I guess I was wrong.

Secondly I have 0 outboard experience (know enough about reading wiring diagrams and engines to get into trouble) and that shop is the only Mercury shop within 60 miles of my house no one else wanted to look at it so I was kinda screwed.

The shop never mentioned a bad CDI box or rectifier and to honest the shop owner was kind of being a prick (he was mad I wired my own ignition last time ((key broke)) the first thing he said to me was what did you **** with this time.

I am very interested in getting this boat up and running because it’s been a great starter boat. Once I start testing stuff I’ll post on here. Probably getting to throwing the volt meter on things come Thursday.

Black/blue started in 87 the 85 was 87-89
Where's home? fill out the signature?

Do yourself a favor and get a "factory service manual"
The aftermarket ones have some information but the factory has the specifics needed to work on these motors.
