I have burned up another voltage regulator again and I'm beginning to suspect I'm not getting enough coolant to the bottom of it to keep it from overheating. The motor never overheats and temp sensors work fine.
Since I live in NWFL where it's warm most of the time i'm fishing, I've thought about bypasing that Control Valve thingy (which I dont know what it does or if it's working anyway) and removing the thermostats. Water pump is less than a year old.
The block is vented on the port side, but not the stbd side, which is higher.
Q1) Should I vent the stbd side?
Q2) If so where?
Q3) Can I remove that control valve without any ill effects?

Thanks for your help in advance,
CB

SoCo1 Good ideas you have.My thoughts....
for what they are worth.
If engine heat was killing your regulator the water level would have to be low in the block, and you would have high engine temps.
Regulator heat can kill itself, and this could be caused by any poor wire connection.Start at the battery wires and follow them to the engine, don't forget the wires at the solenoid.
DHP

Dhadley is the one to ask about that, but i had intended to vent my 88 140 in the place he suggested.
which is stbd side about an inch back from the edge of the block (not head) on the outer right top angle.
(the top is flat then you have a left side and a right side)
to be safe i was going to do it before i put the head back on - so i didnt drill into the case around the sleeve.
i have the drill & tap sizes so that one of the elbows used in the water pressure gauge can be installed.
that would vent into the telltale.
-
if dh doesnt respond ill try to look up an old post or you could do a search on looper block venting.
hope that helps a little.

Re: 1986 J225TXCDA - Volt/Reg problems-overheating

Thanks for the quick replies - Here's an update to what I've done so far:

Disconnected "control valve" which was behind the throttle arm. Appears to only have been some sort of flow control device to water coming out of the bottom of the block going back to the pee hole.. Why - I have no idea.

Removed thermostats - port side was o.k but stbd side spring was broken. Does that mean anything to anyone?

Ran motor on muffs. No appreciable improvement of flow from the pee hole - granted I don't have the greatest water pressure here anyway.

Port side vent at top of block - I saw a small amount of water come out but it petered out after a @ 1 min. after starting,

Will run in water shortly to see if water pump is providing enough pressure.

CB

You cant block the control valve without changing the pressure relief valves on the thermostats. DHadley can tell you what to do about the change over, but you need to verify waterpump is good and correct one. The charging system should be checked with the steps in the service manual. The charging system will not last with dirty and loose connections thru the system. Flywheel magnets also need to be checked. Thermostats and seats were changed this engine, there are still some of the outdated parts floating around, just waiting to be installed by a mechanic that never checks a manual or service bulletin.

Re: 1986 J225TXCDA - Volt/Reg problems-overheating

the water control valve keeps the tstats pushed up against seal below 2000 rpm.
above 2000 rpm the flow gets diverted to telltale, allowing tstats to come off seal for a more positive flow.
-
i have done the swap and taken off the control valve on my 88 140.
with your year the parts should be the same.
-
CAUTION!!!!!
i wouldnt run like you are, unless you want a new powerhead &/or electronics.
it is advisable to put everything back the way it was until you do the complete swap - if you are going to use it.

good luck

Thanks 2K BOAT, but I must have missed something in your advice on the "complete swap".

Are you trying to say that there's a kit of parts required to do this? If so, what should I be looking for?

Thanks,
CB

Update:

Got a new V/R and installed it. Removed thermostats.
Put the Control Valve back on (though I still can't see how that thing can possibly do any good).

Any way, we went fishing & ran 52 miles yesterday. No problems so far.

Thanks to everyone for your advice - it is greatly appreciated.

Chris

if you arent using an tstats it wont.
when i get the temp gauge hooked up, im going to run both setups to sea which one is actually better.

i think by keeping the engine too cool will cause excessive carbon build up.
goodluck.

Increased carbon build up is a possibility - I hadn't thought of that.

I think I will start "blowing out" the cylinders more often, especially during and after prolonged trolling runs.

Thanks for pointing that out.

CB
