Hi, I have a question about my control box I am trying to install. The controls I just bought (used) are from the mid 70's ,is the red plug the same as the one from the eighties?I know the one I had originally had T/T built in to throttle handle and the choke was in the key switch but would that have anything to do with the key not starting the motor. I turn the key to the on position but the only way I can start the motor is to jump the starter. The key will turn the motor off but as I said wont start it.I just installed a new solenoid but that wasn't it. I think the cable is missing a terminal.I don't have the cable here right now to look at so going by memory. That is to say there are maybe six holes but only 5 metal terminals ( 2 bigger). If that plug is the wrong one or broken can I buy just a new plug or do I have to buy the whole cable.Thankyou Bill.

I am surprised you can even turn on the ignition with the 70's harness, Bill.

OMC changed the harness sometime in the mid 80s and I suspect you have purchased an incompatible box/harness.

With both wiring diagrams I think you can modify it to work, but you still will not have the PT&T switch or the keyed primer.

Re: 1986 Johnson control box question

Thanks for the fast reply! I'll have to go on ebay or local salvage to get proper box because the ends of the throttle and shift cables dont line up either.A friend of mine was just telling me that those boxes (square and angled were known for problems)besides being incompatible. I'll have to post some pics of the project I have going now and maybe you could give me some more advice. It's an '83 Galaxy bowrider that I converted from I/O to outboard with rebuilt transom and bobs jackplate. It seems as though lately I get more satisfaction just fixing up boats, selling them and then moving on to another project than actually boating.I will probably keep this one however. This site is fantastic, it has helped me out so many times and saved me money.Soon when I get a little more time I'd like to contribute some of my own experiences and areas that I'm knowledgable in. Thanks again !
