At what temp should the overheat buzzer activate on this motor?
I suspect that my sensor may be faulty.

I believe the contact should close at around 211*F and open at 175*F

So, your saying that if my buzzer is going off, and I can hold my hand on the block 10+ seconds I have a problem, Right? Could the buzzer be grounding out in the controlls? To be honest its kinda confusing me.

If your boat WAS overheating, there would be no way you could hold your hand on the block for 10 seconds. The rule of thumb is that if you can hold your hand on for a 3 second count, it is ok. Having water sizzle is another sure sign that it is overheating. I would test your sensors, they may need replacing.

If you have access to an infrared thermometer, they are a precise way of determing the engines temperature.

Does the buzzer sound immediately when you turn the key to the on position?

Didnt think of the horn Rick :)

If it does sound when you first start the boat, as Rick said, disconnect the tan wire from your horn, if the horn is still going off, it is not functioning properly and you will need to get yourself a new one (they are expensive for what they are BTW). Having the horn stop while performing this test tells you that a component (such as a heat sensor) is at fault. Start with testing the heat sensor, buy unplugging its tan wire. If the horn stops, you know for sure the heat sensor is at fault.

The buzzer came on after about ten min. of trolling. I quickly shut it down and ran to the back, popped the lid and felt the block. warm but not hot. After sitting for 5 min. I restarted and continued trolling, after about ten min. it went off again.(block only warm) By then I had enough and loaded her up.

Then I would test the sensors as per your manual.

Re: 1986 johnson vro 40

Thanks for your help. I replaced the sensor with one from a vro 50 donor motor and so far so good. This will have to do for the week end, but I plan to keep a very close eye on my block temp untill the new part arrives.
