I recently bought a 1986 Mariner Magnum 150 and have a couple of questions:

1. It seems to smoke a good bit. What is the proper mixture?

2. It idols rough or cuts off when it is trimmed down and seems to idol better when trimmed up. I was told that this is common and not to worry about it but I dont think this should be the case. Has anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts on it?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Doogy, all carburated merc V-6's change idle quality if tipped fore or aft...how high the motor sits in the water makes a difference too...the exhaust releif outlet on the lower cowl HAS to be above water, or it will stall....if it is above water even with the engine trimmed all the way down, a problem you have...idle mix, carb synch, idle timing, all affect this....proper mixture is oil in one tank, fuel in the other...this is an oil injected engine.

Thanks for the info.
The previous owner has disconnected the oil injection and has manually mixed it. Everyone I've talked to says thats a good thing. Is it?

If not, could you explain. Thanks for the help.

Rob

G'Day. Doogy, I think what Odd1 is trying to say is thet the exhust relief holes that are just under the cowl at the rear need to be above the water at all times. even when trimmed right in. The motor can snuff out if these holes go below the water. Especially if the motor is put int reverse.
I am suprised thet the oil injection system has been removed as it is a very reliable system. I would look at reinstalling the oil injection. If not then run 50:1

Re: 1986 Mariner Magnum 150 ???

Thanks for the info guys. I took it out yesterday and I believe you are right. The engine sits very low to the water all the time. Should I just raise it on the jack plate? If so, is there anything special I need to do? Any advice is appreciated.

Hey Doogie,
With the motor fully trimmed down, the cavitation plate should be about even with the bottom of the hull (+/- 1").
Backlash
