You guys have been a great help with my motor problems. The motor run great once started and warm.
It is still hard to start. As per your instructions i squeese the ball until hard. Give it some throttle in neutral.
Now here is where i am confused.
Am i choking it when i push the key in and hold it for 20 seconds or do i have to turn the key to the right and hold it there for 20 seconds to choke it? This motor seems to like a lot of gas to start. I assume these motors are all alike in this regard.
Thank you for your help again.

It doesnt have a choke set up, it has an enricher. When you push the key in you should hear the enricher solenoid click. I have a 85 and i only hold it for 10 seconds max then turn the key to start..

Pushing the key in engages the enricher valve. Enricher flows fuel from top carb to the intake of other carbs.

Experiment by pushing the key in for 10 seconds and then try to start.

I have a merc 60 and I need to push the key in for 15 seconds, warm up throttle at 1/4 up, and then start. Otherwise, it won't start!

Re: 1986 Merc 115

I have the same motor 1986 115hp mine is a little hard to start at first start up when cold. The colder outside the harder. I think thats pretty common. Once its warmed up just bump the starter and it fires right up. Colder air richer in oxygen leans the mixture a little I think. Hard cold starting is almost always a lean issue as I understand it. Not sure if the key has to be on for enricher to work I just always turn mine on and then push it in for about 4-6 seconds. If that doesn't do then I give her a little more. Do need to make sure thats working though.

Sorry just reread your original post. 20 seconds seems like an awful long time to hold the enricher on. I have the original owners manual that came with my engine it says "If the engine is cold push in on throttle only button and give engine some throttle to allow starting at a higher rpm. On 90 and 115 model, if engine is cold, Push in on enricher for 4-6 seconds before starting engine. Then turn key past run to start, if necessary, actuate the carburetor enrichener by pushing in on ignition key. As soon as engines starts, release key and allow to return to run. DO NOT allow engine RPM to exceed 2500." Hope that helps.
