1986 merc 150 lower unit leaking

Hi, what can be done about a lower unit that is leaking form the vent plug. appearantly, the threads we damaged at some point before I acquired this motor? Oil leaks out, water leaks in. The local dealer says it needs to be replaced. There must be another option. Thanks

We repair them with a heli-coil

You should be able to buy the kit at your auto parts store
