1986 MERC 90hp 6 cyl inline starts only on neutral at full throttel and die when idle

I just bought a bass boat with a 1986 MERC 90HP 6 cyl inline motor, when i bought it the person had it running for me to see an ensure it was ready for use. When I drop it on the water, I had trouble getting it to start, I can only get it starting when on neutral and full throttle, them bring back some to a lower RPM. When I brig it to idle or try to shift to forward it dies. I lost the contact information for the person I bought it. What could be wrong?

Sounds like carbs, however, since it is new to you, I recommend a compression test followed by a spark test. If that checks out, perform a link and synch. if no improvement, rebuild the carbs.
