1986 Merc. 45hp 2 stroke non tiller outboard.

Just got this engine and boat, when cold it does not want to start. If I crank on it and advance the throttle just as it tries to fire, it will take then will fire on the second crank as long as it is warm.
The electric choke solonoid works fine, the battery is new, 145 compression across the board, new champ. plugs of factory recommended heat range, (would NGK plugs help?) 87 oct. fresh fuel and Qsilver
oil at 50to1

This engine does not have the throttle advance lever as my older Merc's had and you cannot advance the throtte while trying to start due to the neutral safety lock-out. Can the neutral safety lock-out be bypassed as this control unit has the lockout button to disable forward and reverse while advancing the throttle??

As this problem seems to be prevelant with 2 stroke Merc's, what have you Guru's found to remedy this???

Thanks

I find it hard to believe the control box does not have fast idle feature. Is there not a flat lever at the very top of the control box? If you have control box where the only the handle is outside the side panel of the boat, you need to grasp the handle and pull it toward the center of the boat then push forward to fast idle. If may also have a button in the center of the handle where it pivots. Push the button to releast the shifter so you can move the throttle forward.

No, their is no fast idle feature, or as on my older Merc. control boxes, a "flat lever" at the top of the control box.
It does have the button to release the shifter, but you cannot move the throttle forward to start as the neutral safety switch will not allow the engine to turn over when in any position but neutral....

Hi, If you push button & move throttle foward this. Is now start & warm up lever. If
Starter will not engage when doing this the button is not releasing shifter. ;)

You apparently are not pushing the button hard enough to release the shifter or the control box has an issue. That button is definitely the shifter release.

You must have the 3000 which is mounted in the bulkhead and has a large black button. The purpose of depressing this button is to disconnect the shift linkage from the throttle/shift lever so that it is throttle only.....this keeps the shifter in N and the N stop switch is not activated.

When depressed properly, it is obvious that the button went in. On my recently replaced 3000 (with a new 2000 that had the separate fast idle lever on the top where it is easy to use) I had to wiggle the lever back and forth as far as it would go in the N position (not much and don't depress the release button under the top of the T handle so as to stay in the N position) while depressing the button.

You don't want the handle to move from the "slop" in the N position until you get the button to depress; then hold it down/in/depressed till you move the handle to the F position which is now "fast idle only" and the farther the handle is moved forward, the faster the idle. As soon as I hit the sweet spot the button would depress and stay there till the handle was moved back to the N position whereupon the button would pop out and you were back to both functions.

The problem with this "thing" is that when you get the engine to light off, usually it races and your first instinct is to cut the throttle whereupon you inadvertently pull back too much, accidentally getting back into the N position, and the button pops out, putting you in the normal shift/throttle mode, and you have to start over.

Thanks guy's, you hit it right on the head!
The "button" was stuck and once freed did disingauge the nutral safety override, a little forward throttle, a little choke and she fired right up...
Funny, I have the book on this control box and it explaines how it disconnects the F/R when you depress the button, but said nothing about being a fast idle.
