ok guys check this out, i have a 1986 mercruiser 140, alpha 1 combo, it wasnt running great last week so i gave it a tune up, all filters, oil, ignition parts, ect. started it up and it still had a miss in it. i checked timing, vacuumm, still with no results, so i took it to the local marine mechanic, he looks at it and decided to do a compresion check, here are the results,
#1 120
#2 120
#3 120
#4 120
this is the wierd part, if you hook up the ignition while doing the compresion test it starts to run at a higher rpm than if you were just cranking it over. the compresion in the #1 cyl drops to 80 psi, so he thinks the valve may be adjusted to tight. when the rpms pick up, the oil pressure increases and causes that lifter to pump up, causing the valve not to seat, does this seem possible, by the way the motor did run great last season..i find it hard to beleive that a nut on a rocker arm can tighten on its own. what do you guys think?

I really don't think your mechanic knows how to do a compression test.
All plugs must be removed, no way could it try to start. Plus, I have never seen a 4 cyl with compression that even. Something is wrong here.

Check out this link to a Service bulletin from Mercruiser.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/97/97_25.pdf

don, thanks for the reply. i agree with you on the test.. i thought all the plust must be out. also shouldnt he do a leak down test to isolate the leak?

At this point, I doubt there is a leak. Do a proper compression test first, then if it warrants do a leakdown test.
Are you sure it wasn't a bad plug wire, or maybe you were using Champion spark plugs. I just fixed an EFI problem by using Bosch instead of Champion plugs. The owner spent thousands replacing parts hoping to find the problem, then ferry costs to send the boat to us from a different island just to find it had Champion plugs.
At least it's worth a shot.

Then you need to get the compression test done properly to see where you stand. We could suggest everything under the sun, but you still have to start checking somewhere, and from the sounds of things the compression test is a good place to start.

Just to join the bandwagon, do a proper compression test, if any cylinder is low then do a leakdown test. Post your results and we'll go from there. By the way, I agree that the test was not done right the first time....who the he11 ever heard of connecting the ignition while doing a compression test ?
