I have a mercruiser 3.7 170 I had to take water pump/timing cover off to replace it and the gaskets. I had to remove the crank pulley of with a 3 bolt puller. I also had to remove the stator. I have the alternator kit now. Do I need to put the stator back on? Also how do I put the crank pulley back on. It says not to hit with any object. What would I use to put it back on.

The stator can stay off... use a harmonic balancer installer. You can rent one from Auto Zone for free ;)

Here is a video showing one being used..

or a threaded rod or bolt and a bunch of nuts and washers for spacers. Hopefully you used a remover that supplied a steel bushing to protect the threads in the crank.
