I have a mercruiser 3.7 170 I had to take water pump/timing cover off to replace it and the gaskets. I had to remove the crank pulley of with a 3 bolt puller. I also had to remove the stator. I have the alternator kit now. Do I need to put the stator back on? Also how do I put the crank pulley back on. It says not to hit with any object. What would I use to put it back on.

Sell the stator on ebay or throw it away if you have the alternator kit. I bought a longer bolt the same thread as the bolt for the harmonic balancer then stacked more washers onto it as i thightened it on to pull the balancer back on. It took a lot of washers and threading it on and off again to push it back on. But that is how the special tool works basically.

You don't want to do it exactly that way. By turning the bolt into the threads you could strip them out, then you are screwed. Instead get the longer bolt or threaded rod (1/2 in fine thread) washers and a nut. Run the nut all the way up the bolt, stack on some washers, then turn the bolt all the way into the crank hole. Then turn the nut against the washers to push the rotor on. A little grease on the washers might make it easier. That way there is no chance of damaging the crank threads.
