I recently acquired a project boat with what I believe to be 1986 Mercury 50hp S/N: A 952458 (pic attached)

I have not had success yet finding the factory service manual for this particular engine.

I plan to drop the lower unit and replace the impeller, but didn't readily see how/where to disconnect the shift shaft.

Any hints or advice where to disconnect would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I think the shift shaft is splined and just slides out.-----No need to disconnect anything.
