I am a newby to outboards and to there problems. I have spent the last month reading and studying about them in the repair manual I have. My motor when I am starting will fire once and the starter will keep spining but the motor will disengage from it. It is slow to start this way. Once started it seems to run fine and cranks from that point ok. Is it a timing issue which I have not checked. Please help

Sounds like a fuel problem more than a timing problem to me. If it were the timing it would be constant but since it is only when u first start it I would say fuel. make sure you prime it real good before starting. if you continuously prime it and it never gets firm it could be the primer bulb is bad or you have a leak some where like the fuel pumps. most likely your primer bulb though sounds like its not getting enough fuel on the first start then once it does start its primed up and fine
