I have a 1986 Nissan NS70A. Lately I have noticed smoke or steam coming out of the tell-tale. Is this normal? Thanks.

Those parts are no longer available from any source on earth. Its time to throw away the engine.

Hello Guru,

I wouldn't throw away my Grandma just because she's old. I recently purchased an owners manual and carb rebuild kit from YOU for this old motor. I'm not trying to be a smart***** just looking for some friendly advice from someone who may be willing to share their knowledge. You are right about some parts not being available, however I recently purchased a new thermostat(installed w/gasket) and a new impeller(not installed yet). Compression is 149 and 150. Respectable for an 86. I will upgrade to an injected engine someday as the fuel economy on this one is not great. Until then I will do my best to keep this one running and fishing. Thanks again for any advice it is most appreciated and respected.

I think you missed the point. There are no longer any headgaskets available anywhere nor are there any waterpump housings available anywhere. Therefore the engine is now a permanant static display. There are lot of parts still available for the 70 A. Unfortunately what you need is not going to be available as an aftermarket or retrieved from another junk engine. That means that for all practical purposes the engine is scrap. I know it hurts to let something go when it just needs a part or two, but....

Re: 1986 Ns70a

Hi 93Gambler, Guru likes to tell people to through those 70's away. I have the same motor. There are companies that will custom make a head gasket. I know one thing for sure. I will never buy a new motor from Nissan/Tohatsu.

Any company that would take a dump on it's motor like that, is not one to rely on. I can still get gaskets for other outboard motors twice that old. It should not be long before an aftermarket supplier fills the need.

Throwing it away is the dumbest advice I've heard yet, as the parts are worth a good bit on Ebay. I guess some people just want to sell new motors. It's a sorry throw-away society we live in...

Re: 1986 Ns70a

The reason I tell people not to put money into that model engine is to keep them from fixing one thing only to find out that the next thing that goes wrong cannot be repaired. It doesn't have anything to do with my selling them anything. As to not buying a Nissan/Tohatsu because they don't have parts support for a 25 year old model....Wake up buddy. Every brand of outboard has models of engines ten years old or less where something has gone obsolete.

Also, you are responding to a post from 2007...Maybe you can't wake up because you are in a coma due to you being completely unobservant.

Maybe some people search the web for info on this motor to this day, like me. Mine is still running. It is in good shape. These motors are bullet proof. Too bad Tohatsu took a dump on the owner's of these motors.

Found the head gasket... ;)
