This boat was passed down to me, and after sitting for 20 year, I decided to look it over. It will need interior parts, and the flooring redone, it started rotting out last time it was used 20 years ago. I am wondering how much it could cost to get it in usable condition? Also what is it's current value?

:welcome: to iBoats. . .

It's current value is $0.00

Plan on it costing about $3,000 in structural restoration/rebuilding, $2,000 in seating replacement, and possibly $2,000 in engine and drive system work.

I'd say between $5k - $7K materials and parts . . . so call it $6K with you doing much of the work.

You did not mention anything about the motor and if that is salvageable after 20 years. Might be all rusted solid.

The trailer might be worth $400 or so, if sold separately . . .

So if I get the motor working, what would be the value of it then? Trying to figure out my options. Thanks

with a rotten hull and a running motor, about $300 (the value of a 35 year old bob-tail)

if the boat has sentimental value, then its a hard choice to make on restoring or not restoring.

if there is no sentimental value, a free boat is the worlds most expensive boat to repair as they have all been neglected.

in addition to Ted's estimate, if you do the work yourself, plan on at least 2 years of weekends and weeknights of your time.

you state the floor needs to be re-done. the floor is the last thing to rot, so the transom, stringers and floor need to be done.

Unfortunately the boat will probably never sell for what you put into it to get it to a safe usable condition. If the boat is a piece of your family's history it would be worth restoration. I am going through the same thing on my build. I bought mine for $400 with a usable motor and outdrive from a distant relative of my wife. Then her step brother told me it was his grandfather's first boat and he remembered going on the lake with him in the boat. He thanked me many times for getting the boat usable again and not junking it.

My dilemma is this, It's my parents boat. My brother doesn't want anything to do with it. Even, my parents are looking at it as a money pit. My Dad paid 10k for it. And to get it in a usable and safe condition, it could cost 5 to 7k, plus the cost of labor which could be the same amount considering our time isn't free.

I did it. If your going to use it and keep it. It is the best option. If your looking or worried about value. Junk it and just pay the 20 grand and get a usable one.

Nobody's time is free. If you are considering trying to make money on the boat it is a lost cause. The way I look at it is I can spend time with my 7yo restoring a boat and pass on valuable knowledge while preserving a piece of history. It is all how you look at things.
